tarantula display

very nicely done I thought. The two tanks either side have live tarantulas in them, the two in the middle (one above the other) display shed exoskeletons. The live tanks are furnished as well, not just bare tanks like some places have. To the right (out of shot) is a big fake buttressed tree trunk. The whole is enclosed within a hut structure.

there used to be giant anteaters in both Australia and New Zealand (at Auckland Zoo in fact...in the 70s: maybe into the 80s?), and at least Auckland has also had armadillos a long time ago (mid 20th century).

I've never seen an armadillo in my life, and I don't recall ever having seen an anteater either. I've seen sloths at Singapore Zoo and that's it.

Auckland had Giant Anteaters in 1926, as well as Six-banded Armadillo, although no Xenarthrans are listed in the 1948-~1975 guides. There are also none shown on the 1980s maps, but a photo in the Auckland Zoo History book shows a Giant Anteater, c. early 1980s.

I can find no mention of sloths anywhere.

Not too show off (any more than usual anyway), but I have seen three armadillo species, two sloth species, giant anteaters (which are freakin' awesome!) and southern tamandua.:D:D:D

in 1967 the Auckland Zoo received three armadillos, swapped with Denver Zoo for two kea (from Wikipedia, no specific identity of the armadillos given). Apparently these were thought to be the first in the country http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbt...d&NP=2&RF=Display+card+info&QI0=NZCI000029860

Did your information of six-banded armadillos in 1926 come from a guide book from that time?

The photo of the giant anteater with his agouti friends in Tiger By The Tail has always sort of annoyed me because it isn't mentioned in the guidebooks or any further than that one photo in that book itself. You'd think something as odd as an anteater would garner at least a small mention wouldn't you?

Next year I should finally see a giant anteater at Singapore........

Yup, the 2nd Edition of the Guide Book (April 1926) lists both Armadillo and Giant Anteater, and the map also shows both species (the anteater where the Coast is now, and the armadillos up where the NZCCM is now).

The anteater is also shown in a 1926 photo fin Tiger by the Tail.

I've just been browsing for Auckland Zoo anteaters and armadillos, and a pair of giant anteaters "caught beside the River Amazon" left London for Auckland in November 1924, arriving January 1925 (one arrived sick and the other died en route). In 1926 they got another giant anteater from London, which cost seventy pounds.

What is on this link? Is it the back of a postcard? How do you see the front?
it is a note about an article kept in the Auckland Scrap Book (maintained at the Auckland City Library). The link is from the New Zealand Card Index which kept index cards from the 1950s till 1995.

I guess if you go to the library and look up page 81 from the August 1967 Auckland Scrap Book then there will be a newspaper article there about the armadillos.

I just realised the 1979 map does in fact label "Anteater and agoutis"
