Bears, July 1975

There's no ID in my album.
They look like juvenile American Blacks to me; could some of these still be alive at Woburn?

Are those ibex on the hill in the background?

I cannot recall what species was kept immediately behind the American black bears but, during this era, the hills behind the bear enclosures were used for markhor, bighorn sheep, Barbary sheep and mouflon.

The sad thing is that the Goat Hills were absolutely fine, and yet today they are the one part of the Mappin Terraces that are unused.

They could still keep a couple of flocks of sheep, goats or goat-antelopes, a group poorly represented within the UK, many of whose representatives are animals of conservation importance, and which by and large do very well in zoos.

Goats & Sheep on the Mappins are a real loss from the London skyline. Surely the whole of the bear enclosures could have been adapted to give more room and variety of habitat to fewer animals.

They were, just a shame it was for emu and Bennett's wallaby...
