Auckland Zoo Map late 1995.

Ignore all the hand-written words and scribbles, these were my plans for the zoo as an 8 year old.

This shows a number of recent developments: the elephant enclosure, meerkats, NZ aviary, Tui Farm and McDonald's rainforest were all completed post-1990.

Now lost species here include North American Porcupine, Camel, Llama and Lace Monitor.

I find the bat symbol interesting, where it is placed. Is that about where the flamingoes are now?

Not quite, the flamingo enclosure is almost directly opposite Chatters Cafe, while this bat enclosure is roughly where the baboon house now is. After the bats moved out of here, the cage was used for birds. I don't know anything useful about this enclosure, except that it is not shown on the 1988 map, and it was demolished to make way for Hippo River, probably in 1998. If anyone has any photos, I would love to see them!

Love it.:)

Question about the map: why is there a bat symbol in the rhino exhibit?

Yea, I'd like to think my grand plans for the zoo have improved over the past 16 years :D

That would be because near the Rhino exhibit there was a bat exhibit. It's a bit of a weird map, in that most exhibit spaces are coloured yellow, but not the giraffes, zebra, rhinos, llamas, lace monitors, hippos and great apes. And I can think of no reasonable reason for this. The green space incorporating the rhino, zebra and bats was not one exhibit, but rather a series of, mostly hoofstock, exhibits. Species lost in the three years immediately pre-dating this map include: Nilgai, Blackbuck, Waterbuck & Gemsbok, and these were all housed in this area.

oh those would be the pens in the old photos I put in the gallery, yes?

Yes. although I'm not exactly sure how they were arranged. According to the late 1980s map you posted, some were where the elephants enclosure is now, and some on the far left of the rhino/zebra area (which i suspect the rhino replaced).
