This House also later housed the two young female Asian rhinos from Nepal, before they went to Whipsnade. I remember seeing them bathing in the(then) outdoor watermoat.
Hello,
I saw your message in this forum about Jumbo, and I was wondering if somebody could have pictures of Jumbo when he was still alive. I discovered he died in 1988 in London ... I used to play with this elephant in Cameroon when I was young and he was a baby, in 1966 - 1967, when he still lived free in the forest. Thanks in advance if somebody knows more about his stay there.
If you browse the Whipsnade forum, Iara, you will see photos of Jumbo there. He was a victim of an inadequate house, that simply wasn't fit for the purpose of keeping a fully grown bull elephant.
It was a huge shame, and I feel very sad that no efforts were made to establish breeding groups of Loxodonta cyclotis, an animal that is so little known about.

This is terrible news really, it was such a lovely playful and happy little elephant, you just had to call him and, there he was, coming freely from the forest, asking for bananas ... I'll send a photo for the forum ...
