Greater Flamingoes Nesting - Auckland Zoo 2012

In a quiet corner of their exhibit in Hippo River, 14 of the flock of Greater Flamingoes were tending to nests, in which there were at least three eggs (presumably real eggs, but possibly not). The other two birds were feeding in the water.

Flamingo eggs apparently take about a month to hatch, so we should hear by the end of January whether they are actually real eggs that have hatched.

Wow, I totaly missed this development.

Please keep us updated about how it goes and if something will hatch and survive.

I'm not at all sure whether these are real eggs or dummy eggs to encourage breeding. The birds certainly seemed to be treating them as real, so hopefully they are. There has been no word from Auckland Zoo about laying eggs, which would probably be expected if they were real though.

my supposition is that they are dummy eggs. Largely this is based on there being nothing said by the zoo, which surely they would do if they were real eggs. I would like to be proved wrong however.
