Chia Chia the Giant Panda at London Zoo, 15 February 1987

Interesting to look through the wire at a giant panda exhibit that was in place more than 20 years ago. Also, I appreciate the dating of the photographs...thanks!

It seems such a long time ago now that we last had Giant Pandas in the UK. There were (I think) a pair of pandas at London Zoo after Chia Chia but I don't think there have been any since then. This caged enclosure was not very nice at all.

Funnily enough, this is one of the four still-standing Sobells, housing more suited colobus. I've also heard rumours of London being interested in pandas again, any furtherence on this?

At least this enclosure isn't much worse than what the Chinese zoos keep their pandas in (Beijing, Gungzhou (sp?)) spring to mind...

This panda, Chia-Chia was one of the pair given to Ted Heath in 1974 by the Chinese government, along with Ching-Ching.

The panda prior to this pair was Chi-Chi (without the a on the end of her name !) who died in 1972.

Ching-Ching died in 1985, while Chia-Chia left London in 1988 for Mexico City. He died in 1991.

no chai chai still alive

Not sure what you mean ?

This panda, Chia Chia, is definitely dead. There are several references on the web to him dying in Mexico on 13 Oct 1991 if you Google him.

Isn't this panda stuffed an living in the natural history museum? Maybe "living" was the wrong expression lol.
