The world's first public aquarium was indeed at London Zoo; but the current aquarium under the Mappin Terraces is less than 90 years old.

The world's first public aquarium was indeed at London Zoo

And referred to, brilliantly, simply as 'The Fish House'.

Why that didn't stick I'll never know.

The “Fish House” at London Zoo, which opened in 1853, roughly on the site of the old Parrot House, was the world’s first public aquarium.

The current London Zoo Aquarium, beneath the Mappin Terraces, opened in 1924.

I prefer the large variety of species in the interesting smaller exhibits here to what is on offer at the Sea Life Centres .

That's quite an interesting comment. I really can't comment on here but I do like this aquarium a lot. Whilst I've never really liked sea life centures.

I visited the London Zoo aquarium when I visited in '99. Unfortunately since my family was in a rush to get through it, I didn't have a decent enough look through it. :( I heard the first photo of a live fish was taken here.

world's first aquarium

See John Edwards' 'London Zoo from Old Photographs', photo of a Pike by the Count of Montizon in 1853, may be the one.

At one point there was a total of more than 100 tanks in the aquarium, but does anyone know how many exhibits are currently on-show to the public?

This is an absolutely wonderful book that I would highly recommend to all zoo enthusiasts:
