Manchurian crane adult

Enclosure next to sloth bears. 4th August 2010
Very much a 'Whipsnade' species, they've had them (not necessarily the same birds obviously) as long as I can remember. And still breeding too...

Cranes at Whipsnade

Back in the 90s they were supposed to have almost acomplete collection of cranes, all of which had gone by the time I next visited a few years back. All I saw was a single Manchrian & pair of Stanley's. anyone know what happened to the rest?

I remember when most of the big paddocks had a pair of cranes in them, along with the hoofstock and a pair of swans or sheldgeese on the pond. Then more cranes arrived which were held in smaller pens, fairly well away from the public areas. I think there were several pens in the general area of the new pen for European elk (moose, if you must).

Those were the days....

I also remember that the Pond (by the road, opposite the old Lion dell) in what is now the White Rhino paddock (is that called Spicer's Field?) at one time in the summer at least also had either a Crocodile or Alligator living in it. Woebetide any waterfowl visitors...

I think they were American Alligators, possibly down for the summer from London.

Thanks, I somehow thought they were Alligators, maybe there was sign, I can't remember now though.
