Yes, you’re quite right; he climbed over the safety barrier and was fatally mauled after putting his arms through the bars of the cage.
I’m not old enough to remember the contemporary newspaper accounts (being only two years old at the time) but the tragedy is recorded in the ZSL Annual Report for 1956.
Yes, I'm not sure I would have actually read it but I remember my parents talking about it and being familiar with the enclosure already, knew what had happened and where.
In Lucy Pendar's book, she states the park gave the enclosure an updated look in the 1970s. Does anybody know what they did, and how the enclosure looked after?
