It is my understanding that the Chinese Water Deer are actually free-roaming escapees that are living wild on zoo grounds. So the zoo hasn't mixed the deer with the rhino, the deer has just decided to spend some time in the rhino enclosure today.

They are indeed free-roaming-though this in intentional, not an escapee incident! Whipsnade also has free-roaming Mara, muntjac, wallaby, peafowl, jungle fowl and, in the past I believe, macaws.

I believe they also had Australian brush turkeys breeding in the grounds for quite a while. They tried cranes too but they flew away. (Both of those from memory, so maybe not entirely correct).
Interesting how the UK is now home to 10% of the wild population C-W deer.
What is the history of free roaming species at Whipsnade? I think they got rid of the macaws as they started destroying gardens in the surrounding villages!

Well that's an interesting way to exhibit species A lot of zoos do free-roaming peafowl I believe, at least over here. I always enjoy the stories of a 7th story apartment dweller in New York waking up to an Indian Peafowl on their balcony
hehe I plan to! Just as soon as I get my funds in a row!
