Recently-arrived male giraffe, Bashu (left), with female Savannah, and her daughter Willow.

Good shot.:) Love the Whipsnade giraffe group though I don't quite know why.

The new male doesn't look too small to cover the female already in this photo, although the other two are rather bigger/taller than 'Savanah'. Afaik she is the only(?) female calf born to the original 2.3. Reticulateds they obtained, all of which have since died. But they are well set-up again now with 1.4, the best grouping they have had for a long time, presuming(hopefully) Willow grows to maturity and they can keep her.

Colourwise they look more similar in this shot but his is still a bit darker/richer.

So when did Whipsnade get into Retics, and who were the original 2.3?
 
No doubt someone will be more precise, I would say about 1990(?).

I am not sure if the original 2.3. came from a European Zoo that breeds a lot of them, or from a wild import. Anybody?
