Although I visit Whipsnade at least seven or eight times annually it is a long while since I last saw the herd of black fallow deer; today I saw more than fifty of them........

Several people on here have managed to see and photo the Black Fallow in recent months. Despite looking, I haven't seen them on my last few visits. They obviously have a pretty big area to roam in that valley- a sort of mini-deerpark?

Yes, it is a huge paddock and, although I always look for them, it is a long while since I saw them last.

I gave up counting yesterday once I’d reached a total of fifty individuals......

Where abouts in the zoo are they found? I don't think I've ever seen them!

If you walk down the pathway with the hippos on your left and the kudus and impalas on your right then the black fallow deer herd is in the enormous paddock at the end of the road.

They have been there for years (the original stock came from Epping Forest) but they don’t show themselves very often.

And I thought I was the only one who did Deer Counts....;)

This is a lovely shot btw, I didn't say so before.

Thanks for your answers to my other queries also..

And I thought I was the only one who did Deer Counts....;).

According to the most recent ZSL Animal Inventory, Whipsnade had seventy-one of the dark form of fallow deer as at 1st January 2014; I must have seen most of these on Saturday.

Thank you very much.:)

You’re very welcome; it’s always rewarding when photos posted on ZooChat generate some discussion.

Thanks Tim, next time I am visiting I will be sure to take a look!
