It's just a dark-coloured rock, a row of which are laid across the front of each shelter, presumably to retain the bedding and reduce water ingress. See attached photo, also taken Dec 2015 (I think this one is of the shelter in the other enclosure):

overread 6 Jan 2016 Ah yes I see it is indeed a rock - the lichen was making it look fuzzy and green like ice frozen over grass inside.
