From the city of Calgary (population of 1.2 million) it is an hour and a half drive to the city of Drumheller (population of 10,000) and then just outside of that town and seemingly in the middle of nowhere is this famous dinosaur museum.
Nearby Dinosaur Provincial Park has provided the world with a staggering assortment of fossils, and around the museum the number of fossils found has been incredible. The facility offers up a 90-minute "Dinosite" tour where tourists can look for real fossils, and there is a 1.4 km "Badlands Interpretative Trail" that seemed popular but since I was with my army of children I declined the offer.
The museum is located just a few kilometers from Joseph Tyrrell's discovery of the dinosaur "Albertosaurus" and the natural surroundings offer up a beautiful vista. I was strongly reminded of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. The idea at the dinosaur museum is to connect visitors with the land that unearthed thousands of fossils.
