one pair I didn't have my camera out, another pair not close enough for photos, and with the other sightings the birds weren't in any good positions for photography (up in the canopy, so fine for viewing but not for photos at all)

Have you ever seen the South Island kokako? :D As always, I do wonder how many species went extinct before being described by science. I just read about the huia - what a gorgeous bird.

I don't think either have Kokako any more. Auckland went out of the species when it redeveloped its forest aviary into the native species precinct Te Wao Nui (if not before) and they haven't returned. Hamilton released the birds they had into a mainland sanctuary in Northland I think. Mt Bruce is currently the only zoo holding the species that I am aware of. Hopefully they do get re-established in some more zoos.

Its too bad they don't keep this species anymore. My main goal to visit NZ/Hamilton Zoo.
