A decision is going to be made within the next few weeks on where the 4 Asian Elephants will be sent to, but the zoo has confirmed that this exhibit will contain Giant Pandas when those iconic black-and-white bears arrive in 2018 for their 5 year stay. From 2023 onwards there will be Orangutans in the complex, and who would have thought that visitors will see first Asian Elephants, then a yet-to-be-determined species, then bears and then great apes all on the same exhibit footprint. To be honest once the outdoor yard is enclosed the area lends itself well to showcasing a non-pachyderm species as the elephant barn is a decent size and the entire Elephant Crossing area was improved at a cost of $10 million back in 2008.
Can they only be sent to a Canadian zoo or can they send them to an American zoo as well? I am wondering if they would go to a zoo that needs a third elephant, although it's almost pointless and those exhibits would probably need to be updated, or to enlarge a herd in a newer exhibit like the ones in D.C., Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles.

If I were a betting man I'd put my money on either Oklahoma City or Los Angeles, but it will definitely be an AZA-accredited institution in the United States.
This would make me very happy if the girls do come to LA, so I'm hoping you guys' intuition is correct! I do wonder though, if they do come to LA, will they keep Tina and Jewel or send them back to San Diego.
Having several yards in the elephants of Asia complex, Tina and Jewel could be separated from the Calgary trio. However ultimately it would be ideal for them all to integrate as one herd.
