The GV Zoo is 65 acres in size, and there is not as much walking as one would think after browsing through the photos here on ZooChat. The only part that my wife and I do not walk around is the 10 acre black bear/wolf enclosure and the 15 acre bison/elk enclosure, as those are accessed mainly through riding in a free 15-minute bus tour. However, sections of the bison/elk exhibit can be seen on the walking trails.
I always stress to ZooChatters that the GV Zoo is not really that impressive. There are massive fields for around 35 species of hoofstock, but most of the zoo is simply paddock after paddock full of deer and antelope. The more popular animals (lions, tigers, cougars, jaguars, the only yellow baboons in North America) are all behind thick chain-link fence that partially obscures the vision of zoo visitors.
By the way, the nilgai off to the right in this particular photo are two adult females and a baby that is only about 2 months old.
65 acres, I would have guessed at least 300! Well they've certainly gotten the hoofstock and Bear enclosures right. Maybe one day those other paddocks. We here in L.A. realize the struggle it takes to make major improvements to inadequate exhibits. I think the next few years will see positive new changes.
