Grizzly Bear Enclosure - Nov 2012

@Newzooboy: you were brave enough to visit both Toronto and Edmonton in November...yikes! I expect that the solitary Asian elephant in Edmonton (the infamous Lucy) will be in her tiny barn for the next 5 months, and many of the warm-weather critters at both zoos would have been locked indoors. Even this grizzly bear exhibit appears barren and bleak: obvious metal fence in the background, hotwire around the trees on the right-hand side, a drop of water in the concrete pool, ugly "dens" in the center of the enclosure, and all the surrounding trees lacking leaves.

The grizzly exhibit doesn't look too great in the summer either :D:D:D. At least compared to the amazing exhibits in Seattle and Minnesota. Luckily the bears should be getting a new exhibit in a couple of years.

one of the little known stories about this exhibit is that years ago the Zoo increased the size of the exhibit by pushing back the back fenceline. It was heavily planted and not blocked off by hotwire. The bears destroyed everything pretty quickly and the Zoo hasn't replanted the exhibit since, probably because the eventual plan is to re-build the exhibit in a different section of the Zoo.

Yes, lucky to have time on work trips to visit zoos - I was in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa (sadly no time to visit Calgary Zoo). Very cold in Calgary and Edmonton but warmer over East. Edmonton was hard work (my camera lubricant froze) and yes, Lucy was indoors. I like Toronot, despite it's obvious failings. I have visited once before (over 10 years ago) but it didnt seem like much had changed. Also the previous visit was also in Nov, so I'm still yet to see hippos and rhinos, etc out on the African Savanna exhibits. I do like the multitude of intersting small things in the pavilions though.
