The TZ should definitely exhibit more local animals- small creatures that can be found in one's backyard. Might prompt some visitors to open their eyes more to the nature surrounding them.
I agree Cypselurus, most zoo's should have a small section for local fauna, especially in the childrens /petting area. It may instill in children how special the frog, toad or hedgehog they see in their back garden realy is, possibly even do the same to parents. Imagine the conversation "wow If it's in the zoo and we have it here we must be lucky" each time they find afrog or see a butterfly.
This toad is in a backyard wildlife section in the kid's zoo which also features nursery web spiders and fox, coyote, skunk, and raccoon furs to touch. Other native species in the kid's zoo include skunks, groundhogs, and wild turkeys. More Canadian species can be found in the Americas Pavilion and Canadian Domain.
My bad then is it that area with the big spider model and the spider web climbing structure? If that's it, it was never open when I was there, and I assumed it was open only for special events, like the bug displays in some of the pavilions. But it's good news that the zoo is doing this! Like I said, it might open visitors' eyes to the nature flourishing in their own backyard, and in a place like Canada with still plenty of wilderness left, that could be anything from a humble Monarch Butterfly to a Coyote!
