Must be your idea of humour.
On a warm sunny day in winter the cheetahs love to go out in their Savannah exhibit. The keepers say they would happily be out in much colder conditions than it was on that day, when there were two of them dozing in the sun.
Olive Baboons and lions were also out.
Depending on the conditions the zebras, kudus, sable antelope, giraffes and hyenas also go out. Not just weather conditions but exhibit conditions. Im not sure about the Rhinos.
You are right most have the choice. I dont recall ever seeing the hippos, warthogs, ostriches or any of the rainforest animals out in winter. I could be wrong.
The ostriches are allowed outside in the winter although they don't go out often. Yesterday, we had to let the ostriches outside while we cleaned their indoor exhibits. It was very funny when they came back in because the ostriches were covered in snow, making them almost completely white. The zebras were also allowed to go outside, but they didn't go into the main exhibit while I was there.
I could be wrong but I don't think the warthogs or hippos go outside unless it is a very warm winter day. All of the indoor animal holding areas were actually larger than I expected which made me happy.
They would have to be larger holdings simply because it is a northern zoo. It would be cruel to have tiny holding for animals which could have to spend weeks of the winter cooped up because of foul weather.
