Lowland Gorilla

I think based on the grey on the back its Josephine. Definitely not Charles. No baby so not Ngozi. And Johari has a black back. Forget Sadiki and Nassir.

Did you go just to say happy birthday to Sadiki? Big boy is 9 today (Mar 7)

The Toronto Zoo has one of North America's largest indoor gorilla complexes. The gorillas have lots of climbing opportunities, natural floors, a pool, and toys. The outdoor exhibit isn't the greatest, but it isn't too small and the gorillas have lots of things to climb on.

Also this gorilla is a she, not a he, in case you didn't notice when TZFan identified it as Josephine.

He looks sad. He should be in a larger enclosure.

Would everyone please just stop responding to this person. He has been warned by many, including moderators about his uninformed, immature, and sometimes rude posts over the last few days.

He lists his home zoo as Toronto but it appears he has not been there.

Until such time as Sim can get online to deal with this user, I will be locking this thread.

Thanks for unlocking it TeaLovingDave, its so great to have wonderful mods looking out for us.

Arcticwolf the outdoor exhibit for the gorillas might not be as dull as it currently is for long. Its something I might have overlooked mentioning in some of the documents the zoo board had published over the last couple of months but there were several mentions of the gorillas outdoor exhibit. Based on what I remember there are plans for a redesign and expansion of the outdoor exhibit. What I remember is fuzzy but there was definitely mention of getting rid of the mesh as much as possible and having viewing through glass and over moats. There was call for more natural look. And an expansion of the exhibit to pretty much fill all of the green space to the first aid building. Its not a massive expansion but any is better. However as we all know a new master plan is due so what happens is anyones guess right now. It would be the last major eye sore in Africa... we can all argue about the otter exhibit but its not ugly just small. The hippos exhibit is small and more could be done but there are plans for it as soon as the zoo addresses other much more significant problems. The giraffes might as well be considered dealt with. That would leave just the dull unnatural looking gorilla exhibit ... and their day room looking out of place in what is a beautiful section of the zoo.

Personally I would knock down the first aid building move it much closer to the resturaunt and use all of that space not taken up by the gorilla rope course to really expand and enable two yards thus allowing for a bachelor group to be maintained. But thats personal vision not plans. And the day room, well it wouldnt be so bad if if they added some natural texture to the walls, better looking ground cover and painted what wasnt made to look natural. On the other hand its kind of a history spot for the zoo. This is where the gorillas used to be kept all winter and it just goes to show the massive improvements in animal husbandry throughout the zoo and the zoological community. However if we keep a bachelor troop down the line it would be better to at least make it pretty for them and the family when they arent on exhibit in the big indoor exhibit.
