Wow! The hippo exhibit looks so different. I love how you can see the elephants in the background. I wish I was alive at the time when the zoo had a baby hippo.
I was alive when there were 3 babies born but I was too small to take to the zoo. I have seen a baby pygmy hippo at the zoo though, Cleopatra who was born in 1992. I remember looking down at her and mom in their pool. She was so little and cute I fell in love with hippos at that moment, particularily pygmy hippos.
@TZFan Back when Toronto Zoo had elephants and hippos, did they have indoor exhibits for them also, or were they only viewable by the public in their months outside?
@DavidBrown, little from both. The elephants had an indoor exhibit. The same space that currently houses the giraffes when they are indoors. So they were on display year round. If it was safe for them to be outside they were given the choice. The river hippos on the other hand have only ever been on display in warmer months. They have space in what was originally the bull barn for our male elephant Tantor. Its been converted and upgraded for them over the years but its location at the back of the current giraffe exhibit makes it inaccessible to guest so a conversion for winter display has never been considered. Now the pygmy hippos have never been outside. They have always been on display only in the Rainforest Pavilion.
@Nile Hippo Expert, you are correct. I had the wrong info back then. It is correct in my much more recent family tree thread. Couldn't tell you where I got the names from back then. Geez... I posted that photo nearly 10 years ago. Where does time go? Heck my parents would probably say the same thing. They were the ones who took the photos well before I was even born.
