Elephants 1979 or 1980

I'm fairly sure this is a photo of the elephants on exhibit in either the spring or fall of 1979 or 1980. I think you can see the hippo house in the background. If anyone can confirm this I have several other pictures my parents took then. My parents think that they are zoo photos but I pulled the pack they were in out around the same time they went on their honeymoon so it could be another zoo. I cant think of another zoo with African Elephants and a climate cold enough to have no leaves on a tree they would have gone to. They aren't big travellers.

I figured it out. It is definitely the zoo. I found a picture I took in the 1990's that also shows the hippo house in the background and its distintive roof is in both. Good thing the one photo I found with the elephants has it and my finger isn't covering it... I really had to edit down the photo to get rid of most of my hand.

Thanks for sharing these old photos TZFan. I really enjoy seeing older pictures from the zoo. It is strange to see so many elephants in the exhibit since for the past few years there have only been three. Hopefully this exhibit has some grass added to it when the giraffes move in so it doesn't look so dusty.

I've also figured out when my parents visited. The spring of 1980, likely April or early may based on two factors from other photos. I have a picture of twin polar bear cubs... the only possiblities are twins Bisitek and Sanikiluaq so that means 1980 in the spring based on size. The two hippos together tells me it has to before the birth of Rosie and Flagstaffs son Homer in late May 1980.

Don't forget that the Hippo House was also home to Tantor, the Zoo's male elephant. The hippos had one side of the house, while Tantor had the other side. I believe you can see part of the sliding door in the picture.

I did not know that. I would have thought he was kept with the girls. I know special housing is required for bulls but I just assumed it would have been in the elephant house. Thanks for that cool tidbit.
