Barbary Macaque

Toronto Zoo visitors miss Eurasia which has been closed for two long years for renovation, so I am posting a few pictures, some quite old, some from the Zoomobile drive-through that opened last spring, some from Red Panda Day, and of course one of the Giant Pandas who arrived last year.

Personally I preferred the Japanese Macaques. I loved watching them wade and swim in the moat during the winter. They were a must for every winter visit.

Although it is interesting that we happen to be one of two places left in North America with Barbary Apes and have the largest collection with the 6 of them... unless natural attrition has occured with some.

The Barbary macaques probably won't be at the zoo for much longer because I was told that many of them are very old.

I agree with you TZFan that the Japanese macaques were very fun to watch, even though I only have a few memories of them because they left when I was a kid.

When was this picture taken Mr. Wrinkly? I don't ever remember seeing a baby Barbary macaque.

This was a slide from long ago - one of these days I will check the date on it.

I wonder if the zoo might consider sending them to the sanctuary where the other 4 barbary macaques are. They were seized from a Las Vegas Zoo which was forced to close. If its conditions are nice it might be good for them to spend their remaining days with others of their own kind. I think the others are younger so the odds of ours being alone in their final days probably wouldnt happen. That probably wouldnt be considered though until the zoo is ready to work on the Canadian Wilderness and needs the space.

It's a shame that a Japanese Macaque exhibit wasnt added to the Eurasian Wilds. There's still space there for one probably.
