This stork does have something wrong with its beak and it lives with the kudu and other birds. I'm pretty sure that the keepers told me his name is Artie, but I forget why his beak is like that.
It was in the kudu exhibit. I have never noticed the problem before. I didnt notice it until I got home and the picture was blown up larger. At least I now know its Artie. Very weird looking beak.
I liked looking at Ethel in the Discovery Zone. See still seems so much smaller than the others and it looks like there was still down on the back of her head... unless there was a baby Im not aware of. It was in the second exhibit entering the Discovery Zone
This is Zuri. The story is that is was pretty sick as a chick and had difficulty picking her head up off the nest. While she was eventually nursed back to health, the result was a twisted beak.
I guess I mixed the storks up. I knew that Artie and Zuri were in the kudu exhibit and I thought I remembered hearing a keeper say that Artie was the one with a twisted beak. Thank you for correcting me.
Ok Zuri makes sense... I remember reading in the SSP that she was excluded from breeding for medical reasons. The medical reason wasnt listed but this could very well be it. Maybe the twisted bill means she cannot properly help feed chicks... or maybe its whatever made her sick in the first place. I love learning new things.
