Sumatran Orangutan

Wanted to share one of my good photos with you guys. The series I took of the Orangutans was by far some of my favourite.

I'm pretty sure this is Jingga, as she was with her mother Ramai (I think that's her name), who is clearly bigger. For the most part I think I can tell the Orangutans apart, except for which boy is which, between Budi and Kembali.

Telling Budi and Kembali apart isnt hard. Budi looks like hes going bald. Not that he is hes probably just starting to develop his cheek pads. Kembali looks like he's got more shaggy head hair. His face is also a little lighter probably due to being months younger so that might change.

I figure that was the case. I have pictures of both of them on my flickr account. I just needed to confirm.

Budi, Kembali, and Jingga are all born in 2006 only being a couple months apart, so they're all around the same size and maturing around the same rate.

Glad I could help.

I do know they are all 2006 babies. Budi is nearly a year older then Jingga so thats a sizable difference insuch slow maturing animals. Budi is 7 or 8 months older than Kembali so it could make a little difference. They could just be maturing at slightly diffferent rates due to their different mothers or dominance or just because. We dont all hit puberty at the same time. Anything is possible.

It'll be interesting to see Budi mature into a full grown breeding male, despite it being possibly years away. Which females will he be able to breed with? Obviously not his mom, but is he restricted from any of the other females as well?

Also, I wonder when they'll be sending Kembali away. Maturing males can affect other maturing males in maturing.

Budi can breed with Ramai and Sekali. His father is Molek while their father is Dinding. They originally thought he was sired by Dinding but nope Molek. Ramai's mother was Chantek while Sekali's was Abbigail. Ramai is actually Sekali's half sister/niece. The current plan is to let Budi breed with the girls but hes too timid right now. Sadly their breeding potential is being wasted on him. Personally I want both boys gone and a mature male brought in.

Kembali cannot breed at the zoo. He will have to go. Cant breed with mom Sekali. Cant breed with aunt Ramai. Cant breed with sister Jingga. He has no options.

If Budi were to stay Jingga must go as well. Which would be a shame. She is the legacy orang in the group. She is the great granddaughter of Mias and Abbigail. They were two of the original orangs. Her grandmother Chantek was the zoos first baby possibly the first orang born in Canada. Mom Ramai is the first 3rd generation orang at the zoo. Jingga is the only fourth generation. I would prefer to see her stay and in another 6-7 years give birth to the zoos first fifth generation orang.

Its a real shame that the male that was supposed to arrive this year died. Had he lived both boys would have left and Jingga would have stayed. I just hope they change their minds on Budi. I want Jingga she is the perfect legacy animal.
