Wow TZFan!
What a thorogh list, thank you for taking the time to share it with us, I notice a lot of species that are still around or that were around in recent history, a few things bring up an interesting topic for discuss, one of those things is seeing that Common chimpanzees were planned but never exhibited (especially being a major collection)
It is also interesting to see both Cape fur seals and African penguins listed, because African penguins occupy the old Cape fur seal exhibit
Happy I could partially help. I know there are tons more that should be on that list. But without proof it would only be guesses that they were there in 1977.
I dont have a lot of info on the chimps. Just three females and that they were never on display. And they went back overseas when they left. One was named Sudi.
The fur seals and penguins were originally to be exhibited together in the current penguin pool. If you have seen any old photos of the exhibit there where tiny little shelters all over the back side of the exhibit where rocks are now. These were supposed to be for the penguins. However the penguins weren't so keen on being exhibit with their natural predator. They hid terrified in the shelters all day. It wasnt long before they were relocated to the pavilion where they lived until 1995 when the remainder of the flock went mostly to Granby Zoo. The zoo was penguinless until the new flock arrived to take up residence in their current home.
Here's a list of former species at the zoo. I cant tell you if some of the species were at the zoo in 1977. Some form the list arrived for opening but would leave before 1977. Others arrived later and left more recently. This probably isnt even a full list of former species.
