Giraffe exhibit

Former elephant exhibit refurbished for the giraffes.
This is the view from the back wall. There is a sliding door on the left for the giraffes to move from their holding area. It has a large skylight in addition to the windows and is very airy. There were two informative boards on easels for the member visits this weekend; presumably they will be available later in the walk-thru area seen at the back.
The giraffes were outside but we did not have access to their holding area.

Thanks for sharing these pictures. I like how open the giraffe house feels and can't wait for it to be open. It will be nice to be able to see the giraffes in the winter.

Very nice. The murals look like they paid someone with talent this time... unlike the pandas.

Is this space bigger than it looks? Seems like a small space for such large animals unless my lack of spacial visualization is working against me again.

There is certainly a huge amount of space inside this building, and since many Giraffe Houses around the world incorporate exhibits for smaller species it will be intriguing to see if the zoo places some additional animals on display.

Eland are supposed to join the giraffes outside, with other species maybe being a possibility in the future. However the plan as I have heard it is for the eland and anything else to be housed in the hippo house, in the half that has sat empty and pretty much untouched since bull elephant, Tantor's, 1989 death. Some conversions would be needed there but its a lot of space which will only double in time when the hippos are moved into a new barn. Unfortunately that means they would be off display all winter but not much can be done about that.
