I know and it's so very hard for me to bite my tongue. I want to correct and educate. I don't want to contradict a parent in front of their child though. It drives me nuts with the really simple things. An ibis is clearly not a flamingo. I don't ask that they know it's an ibis but please know it's not a flamingo.
I feel the exact same. One of the biggest mistakes I hear at the zoo is mistaking a Cheetah for a Leopard, which the zoo doesn't even have. Another is thinking Jerroh is a female lion, although that one makes sense.
Yeah if they have spots it must be a leopard... right? Leopards are the only cats with spots clearly.
I will excuse people for not knowing Jerroh is a male. Usually no mane means lioness. It's not often zoos castrate male lions. I give them credit for knowing no mane = lioness. Jerroh is unique. I prefer those people to the ones who call lions tigers and tigers lions.
My favourite was from my last visit where I heard Bucky the adult male baburisa called a hippo and a baby rhino by two different sets of parents. It made me so sad to realize that our education is failing people miserably if they cannot identify hippos and rhinos. Again if they don't know its a babirusa that's totally fine. That's something for enthusiasts such as ourselves. But if asked to name a zoo animal hippo and rhino come up probably in the top ten for answers. You have to have learned what they looked like as a preschooler.
