I have a few memories of seeing them inside the African Pavilion. Where exactly I do not recall. We usually seemed to miss them on our visits... or I was more focused on gorillas, otters, meerkats and mandrills. I wasn't even into pygmy hippos much.
Beautiful! I don't remember where exactly they were at the zoo. I was quite young at the time. But like TZFan I remember seeing them in the African Pavillion.
From the thread Former Toronto Zoo Animals 2 days ago:
"Bongos were in the outdoor enclosure where the Red River Hogs are now. I cannot remember exactly where they were in the off-season. Wish we still had them."
But do you remember them having an indoor enclosure Mr Wrinkly? I don't think I ever saw them outside. My few fleeting memories involve being inside myself and seeing them inside... maybe a window into their holding? The clearest memory I have is looking through boards that were up to see a female bongo with a very small calf. The calf was probably why it was boarded up to provide mom and baby with privacy while bonding.
On a side tangent here but do you have a lot of old slides of the zoo? It would be cool if when you have time naturally you could post some of them with animals the zoo no longer keeps or old exhibit photos. If you don't want to please don't feel you have to but it would be neat to see some of what you have. The few photos my family had still kicking around, or that weren't lovely pictures of blur or my finger on the lends (I had real problems with that), were neat to look at and see again. Again no pressure to do so. Just wondering.
I have no memory of seeing bongos inside and don't think there was anywhere inside big enough for them. However I know a couple of people to ask when I get the chance.
Old slides - I did post a few a couple of years ago. We had a highly edited down collection of slides until my ex was left alone with them and removed most of the best ones, regardless of who took them! Also took all the early pics of the first two cats we had. But I kept the cats!
Will see if there are any worth posting - sometime.
Maybe like I said I was looking at them through a window into their barn. Hard to say when we are talking early childhood memories. Could be like my manufactured memory of seeing the pandas the first time they visits. I could swear I remember seeing them but my parents assure me I never did.
I would greatly appreciate anything you find worth posting.
Sucks about your ex but at least you kept the cats.
