Empty Polar Bear Exhibit

March 2009. This is half of the old polar bear pit, which has been empty since the surviving bear (Tuk) died in 1997. This enclosure is outside and slightly apart from the main aquarium entrance, and I'm surprised that the abomination is still standing in 2009.

What are thoose things that look like what i pick up after my dog in the park??

I have no idea, and was hoping that someone would be able to tell me. It almost seems as if those ugly blobs are an accumulation of leaves, twigs, etc from the overhanging tree branches. They looked like piles of densely packed hay...

Lol. It looks like expanding foam...

It may be ART!

Or maybe it's meant to remind the polar bears of the tundra landscape they're native too. LOL

I thought they were jail bidden walruses at first

You are right! I read an article about it a few weeks ago, and apparently local artists in the Vancouver area have had a rotational display of some sort in the old, decrepit polar bear pits. The photo that I took has burlap sacks in it, and the sacks are supposed to resemble zoo animals lounging around their enclosure. Intriguing...
