Abandoned Polar Bear Enclosure

May 5th, 2012. This enclosure is not associated with the aquarium but is located via a pathway that is only a couple of minutes away. Stanley Park used to have a small zoo within its 1,000 acres, and it was closed in 1996. The last polar bear died in late 1997 and this bear pit has now sat empty for 15 years.

What is that thing in the moat?

It is a black metal transport cage. If you click on the photo and zoom in then you can see what it is, but my first impression was that it was a bunk-bed!

Ok, I see. But why is it there? Does not look as old as the rest.

I have no idea even why the grottoes are still there but it would cost a lot of money to fill them in and destroy them. They are eyesores but the last part of the Stanley Park Zoo still in place and I suppose that there is some sort of grim historical purpose to them. The transport cage has almost certainly been there for at least 17 years as I'm not sure what purpose it would have served being added at a later date. Who knows?

The crate looks quite new though. Perhaps it's used to trap unfortunate wildlife that falls into the grotto. That's the only reason I can think of for its existence.
