it was originally two adjoining bear pits with concrete terraces (or steps if you like). I believe its almost a century old. When the sun bears were obtained the dividing wall was removed (the bottom of it can still be seen if you look down into the moat at the front of the enclosure) and the terraces remodelled a little bit.
