Orangutans in mexican zoos
Chapultepec zoo, Toto and jambi, hybrid males, both brothers born at Chapultepec.
Zacango zoo, Guero, hybrid male
Guadalajara, currently only proven breeding pair in Mexico with 1 young.
Zooleon. sumatran male and female, on loan from U.S. zoos.
All 4 exhibits are adequate, but not outstanding.
YESTERDAY,AUGUST 2,2014, A female veternary intern broke zoo protocols and tried to feed Toto unsupervised.Toto bit off her finger. She was fortunate to only lose a finger after such a stupid act.
Toto is in the news yet again. An animal rights group requested that Toto be sent to a primate sanctuary, ( they were inspired by the case of sandra the orangutan at buenos aires zoo who was granted habeas corpus). Chapultepec zoo oficials have responded that Toto is well cared for and as a male hybrid is not for breeding purposes, so will continue to live alone. Toto will not leave mexico city the direccion de zoologicos director has clearly stated.
