Mexican naked dog

A fine xolocuintle picture, estimado vogel. One of my colleagues at the Universidad nacional de mexico is the world specialist in xolocuintle studies. His name is Dr. Raul Valadez. The remains of these dogs often appear in prehispanic burials. He showed me photos of xolo litters with both naked and hairy puppies. Breeders nearly always cull the hairy puppies because they have a very low value.
It is only fair in all the zoo euthanasia controversy to remember that domestic animal breeders cull unwanted animals all the time, but the general public does not know or see this.

Carlos, how common are these dogs in zoos in Mexico?

Interesting question, David. In central Mexico, i have only seen them at chapultepec zoo in mexico city.Vogelcommando found xolos at crocum and at the merida zoo. I saw xolos at the Xcaret evening show. So it seems that there are more of these dogs on exhibit in southern mexico. Since they have so little hair, xolos do better in tropical areas. Xolos are much in demand as pets in Mexico as a nationalist expression. Frida kahlo and Diego rivera often painted xolos. Here is a link to a nice article in english on xolos.http://www.fronterasdesk.org/conten...enic-carnivorous-and-can-sport-natural-mohawk

As carlos55 said, I saw them at Merida and Crococun but on the map of Chetumal Zoo I can't discover anything looking like a naked dog. The one(s) at Xcaret which are used in the show, I didn't see and I guess they are kept behind the scenes when not in the show.
