yucatan brocket deer xcaret park
mazama pandora called yuk in maya. very rare in animal collections, xcaret had 3 on exhibit, male, female and a juvenile.

AHHH!!! So jealous!! I went to Xcaret when I was probably 10, but have no recollection of seeing or photographing these. I've seen 4 brocket species but never this one! Looks like I'll have to plan another trip to Mexico sometime soon. Should be doable since I'm right nextdoor in USA!

The brockets are held near the aviaries next to the macaws. They are very easy to miss in a large park like xcaret. If Africam safari park sent surplus red brockets to Phoenix zoo, then perhaps someday Xcaret can send yucatan brockets to a US zoo.

Carlos77, I hope to see that happen one day, maybe Los Angeles Zoo could get some for a roundhouse exhibit or perhaps Santa Ana Zoo could get them because they specialize in animals native to mexico, central america and south america, anyways thanks for posting this wonderful photo of such an amazing cervid !!!

Ungulate nerd, definitely L.A. and Santa barbara zoos would be great places to send Yucatan brockets or yuks. Actually southern Florida has a very similar climate and vegatation to the northern Yucatan peninsula, yet unlike LA, San Diego, or Santa ana zoos, Miami and Tampa have not shown much interest in breeding rare mexican species. I suppose that Xcaret has more yuks off exhibit. I am not certain if any other animal collection breeds these little fellows.

Yeah it is sad that Miami and Tampa have no interest in breeding or exhibiting rare mexican fauna, because mexico has some very unique endemic species like Yucatan brown brockets, Peninsular pronghorns, Volcano rabbits and others, In fact mexican wildlife are so overlooked and under appreciated because when average people think about rare exotic wildlife they think of places like africa and india, so that is why more zoos should exhibit and breed such species as yucatan brown brockets

So it turns out that Yucatan brown brockets (Mazama pandora) have been imported into the United States, I am not sure of the exact dates, but it turns out that the Gladys Porter Zoo had them, I found this out in one of the International Zoo Yearbook volumes at work

Very interesting information, ungulate nerd. On the GPZ gallery i saw photos of the mexican red brocket. Does anyone know if the GPZ once actually exhibited both yucatan brockets and red brockets ?
