Very interesting information, ungulate nerd. On the GPZ gallery i saw photos of the mexican red brocket. Does anyone know if the GPZ once actually exhibited both yucatan brockets and red brockets ?

Thanks Carlos77, I do not for sure know if the two species were exhibited at the same time, but from what I know about the zoo's history, I would imagine so

It also turns out that the "Gray brockets" that lived at the Los Angeles Zoo were actually Yucatan brown brockets, because I think that Los Angeles Zoo's "Gray brockets" came from GPZ

I found more information about the Yucatan brown brockets (Mazama pandora) at Gladys Porter Zoo, they had them from 1973 to 1983

About the Brocket deers on the picture : At Xcaret the Brocket deers are labeled Venado temazate and the scientific name labeled Mazama americana ! Because I didn't note that during my visit I also was quit convinsed I had seen Yucatan brocket deers but after seeing the sign I had photograped I send an Email to Xcaret and they send me the information that they had 2 deer species : the Yucatan white-tailed deer ( 20 ) and the "Temazate deer" ( 4 of them ) without mention the scientific name.
Now I'm still not sure if the Temazate deer is Mazama amiricana or M. Pandora ???

When giant eland went to xcaret last year he asked a staff member why these deer where not identified as mazama pandora. The answer was that they considered mazama pandora to be only a subspecies of mazama americana. The mazama americana I have seen and photographed at Chapultepec, san juan de aragon and africam safari puebla were very different from these cervids pictured here ( see the gallery), so i do not understand why they are not labeled as mazama pandora because they are so singular. It was only a about a year ago when i posted this picture and began all the yucatan brocket deer interest on zoochat.

@ carlos, I also am the opinion the animals the animals at Xcaret are Yucatan brocket deers because they looked exactly like the animals I had seen a few days before at Merida Zoo ! I was a little confuced by the sign used at Xcaret but as you explain, if they think Mazama pandora is a subspecies of Mazama americana, this would explain the sign - on which is mentioned also that the animal is common ! For Mazama amiricana this may be true, for Mazama Pandora surtainly not !

Actually it was toto not giant eland who was told by the xcaret staff that the subspecies was not labelled. You are correct vogel that mazama pandora is listed as vulnerable by the ICUN. They are only secure in the wild in 3 protected areas, sian kan, rio largartos and celestun and all these reserves are very distant from each other.
