teporingo or volcano rabbit san juan de aragon zoo - Now all 3 mexico city zoos have teporingo exhibits. The san juan de aragon teporingo exhibit just opened this year, 2014.
All the volcano rabbits are managed by the dirección general de zoologicos del distrito federal. The 3 mexico city zoos hold over 300 teporingos at chapultepec, los coyotes and now san juan de aragon.
The teporingos are found in protected areas of Mt. Popocateptl near mexico city. Their population is stable at about 3,400 animals. The problem is that their habitat is so limited.
I heard that the San Juan zoo was renovated some years back. They have a Mexican precinct, do they not? And the only berrendo (I do wish they get a breeding group of Sonorans)!!!
When i went to san juan de aragon zoo last weekend i was happy to find new renovated exhibits in the older section and even happier to find that among those exhibits were the volcano rabbits or teporingos which had never been exhibited at Aragon. My only complaint is that the window recieves no shade which makes it harder to photograph the teporingos than at chapultepec or los coyotes.
If you see the gallery you will find that i did photograph the peninsular pronghorn or berrendo, but these lovely animals did not breed in mexico city, which is wet and humid.
LA zoo was sucessfull in breeding them, they have a drier climate there.
