I think it is also important to point out that this was a temporary traveling sort of exhibit, not a permanent installation (unlike what he eventually built in Hamburg)

This is a pretty good book (just finishing reading it myself) A large portion of the book is devoted to Hagenbeck's "people shows" but it is quite interesting none the less.
