I have never seen a jackal in an AZA zoo. They seem to be a commonly bred canine species in private collections. There was talk about a zoo in Co, not sure which zoo, getting a breeding pair. Not quite sure what happened but apparently there is a law in Co about the ownership of just jackals, and that you can't own them at all because of the coyote population.... thats all I heard.
thks pacarana i know that living treasures has 2 jackals and they were imported from africa from what the owner told me. such a beautiful animal and so rare.
Never seen a brown, or even a striped in the trade. Doubt that there is on in the U.S. Although, I do know of a couple of aardwolves in private collections. If there is aardwolves, one would think that a brown could easily pop up.
Trade, as in private trade. I didn't know "trade" continued into AZA zoos. I have never heard of it in that way, only in the way of private individuals buying from other private breeders or exports. Search some forums a bit and its almost always used when referring to obtainability of wild caught specimens. AZA zoos do "trade" (verb) amongst each other but the "trade" (noun) , or what I have used for many years, refers to only private collections.
