I know hardly anyone amongst the visitors reads or cares about the scientific name, but I really do think that if a zoo lays claim to be serious about education then they need to be there - however unobtrusive or tucked away in the corner. They're easy enough to ignore if you're not interested.
It's all very well with a Collared Peccary, which has a fairly consistent common name and is one of only a small group of easily-distinguishable species, but how would this approach work with freshwater turtles? Or weavers, or phasmids, or cichlids - where the common names are often rather made-up and tell you little or nothing about which species it actually is you're looking at.
you know what, I only just realised the distribution map for collared peccary at the top of this sign is missing South America entirely!!
(A moot point now though, as there are no more peccaries in NZ, the last three being Wellington Zoo's ones which were put down not too long ago due to old age complications)
