These photos bring back memories of my Yellowstone trip, way back in 1968. I was 13 and counted about 25 Black Bears. We also drove into Montana one evening to the local dump, and waited, along with many others, in our car for the Grizzlies to come up. There were about 4 or 5 that finally came to rummage through the dump for a meal. The largest bears I've ever seen. What was even more puzzling, the dozens of people standing outside their vehicles, within 20-30 feet of these Goliaths.

It's a lot harder to see bears there now adays. They stopped the feeding, so now they act like bears and are harder to find.

That's what I've heard. Back then, any trip through the park in your vehicle, was an almost guaranteed traffic jam for a bear sighting along the road. It was against the law to feed any of the animals back then also, but they did it any way. I wasn't getting out of the car or opening a window whenever a bear was around. But I guess they stopped the open garbage dump, just outside the northern border of Yellowstone I visited. Too dangerous, and not very good for the bears.
