This is at Smithville Lake, a lake just north of Kansas City in Missouri. They normaly spend the whole year in Canada. However, this year, due to a lemming shortage, they have been coming down into the lower 48, as far south as Oklahoma. This lake has had as many as 5 at one time!
Lucky guy. The UK is fortunate to see any during the winter.
A single pair nested in Shetland, right off the North coast of Scotland, from 1967 to 1975, but then the male disappeared and no further breeding has been attempted. Probably the fact that we have no lemmings didn't help.
Nice shot! I made the pilgramage down to Smithville Lake too, as I couldn't resist the allure of a snow owl, and 5 on one lake was just too great. I doubt I'm ever going to see 3 snowies in one day again though.
