Of course the title is a very common misnomer. They are actually feral burros.

Not only do the general public mistakenly refer to them as wild burros and wild horses, but in the case of horses they actually believe they are native wildlife. This creates a problem because people then think they deserve protection and there are actually so-called wild horse preserves in this country, which I find insane.

There is, of course, the argument that burros and horses fill an ecological niche that was vacated 10,000 years ago when humans arrived in North America and the native horses went extinct.

They are actually already protected by federal law.
