Definitely not a common sandpiper or its American equivalent the spotted sandpiper. Not sure which Calidris this is.
 
Didn't actualy notice the picture was made in America but the Common is seen now and then on the west-coast, however the Gulf of Mexico is realy out of it's range.
Could it then be the Least Sandpiper ?
 
Well it appears to me as though the Least Sandpiper has more orangish colored legs and these birds have black ones.

Sanderling moulting into winter plumage? Their poses look like the non-stop motion of sanderling near the tideline.

Here's another view of one standing still. Let's see if that helps. It's standing next my other unidentified bird in another picture.
