Our only Red-fronted Macaw?

This bird was apparently the result of a customs seizure and, for some reason, was not destroyed when it was found. This may be the only one in the country, and I have been told that the zoo staff intend to export it eventually. Taken on the 17th of August, 2014.

No possibilities to bring in some legal partner for this one, they are doing quite well in Europe and America ?

Importing almost all bird species is now completely illegal in Australasia.

there has been work done on legislation for importing psittacines (I think just eggs, but I'm not sure) but it hasn't really gone anywhere yet. I don't know what stage it is at, or if it has been abandoned. But, no, currently no way to import any partners.

There were attempts a few years ago to get special permission to import this individual to PRIAM in Australia but they obviously have the same problems with importing birds as NZ does. As above, again I don't know if any further progress has been made on that or not.

Such a shame and I didn't know it was THAT difficult to bring in legally captive bred birds.
To export it would be easier ?

It is impossible to import any birds to NZ except flamingoes (as chicks or eggs) and domestic turkeys and chickens (both as eggs only).

It is impossible to import any birds into Australia except domestic ducks, turkeys and chickens (all as eggs only); domestic pigeons (adults allowed); and king and gentoo penguins from New Zealand (adults allowed).

Exporting birds from either country is not an issue if they are exotic (the only complication obviously being if they are a CITES species).
