Carolina Wren

nuthatches have little upturned bills and a short tail. It looks like a wren to me, so I googled American wrens and some photos of Carolina Wren look similar. I don't really know American birds though.

Yes, I did a google search of birds in my county and I got a whold PDF pamphlet and Carolina Wren and Red-breasted nuthatch were my two options so I guess I'll go with the former.

It's a Red-breasted Nuthatch, not a Carolina Wren. Compare the two:

It's a Red-breasted Nuthatch, not a Carolina Wren. Compare the two:
no, the bird in savethelephant's photo has a long downcurving bill and a long barred tail. Pretty much the exact opposite of a nuthatch's bill and tail.

The bill of the Nuthatch I provided a photograph of is long and straight :p just like the bird in STE's photograph. Also the colour is a closer match.

the nuthatch bill upturns at the tip, this can be seen in the photo you show. The Carolina Wren's bill downcurves very noticeably at the tip - as can be clearly seen in Savethelephant's photo.

Carolina Wrens are variable in colour (see Maguari's links, for example).
