the walk-through kea aviary at Willowbank

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Christchurch, 23 July 2008
there are seven kea in the aviary (and one outside that escaped about two years ago and never got recaptured, but which still remains in the vicinity)

It's actually called the 'Walk-through Alpine Aviary'. As well as the kea there are black swans, scaup, brown teal, paradise ducks, white-faced herons, Australian crested pigeons, ring-necked doves, and I think some others I can't recall. Last year there were also red-legged partridge in here, but I don't know if they still are. When the aviary first opened many years ago there was a young chamois and some harriers as well as the kea. Often it seems to be a sort of dumping ground for birds they're not sure what to do with (eg, crested pigeons have got absolutely nothing to do with the NZ alpine environment).
