Auckland Island pigs

a feral breed descended from domestic pigs introduced to subantarctic Auckland Island in the 1800s. The NZ Department of Conservation have now eliminated the pigs from the island to protect the fragile ecosystem of the island. The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand (based at Willowbank) caught nineteen pigs in 1999 before the eradication and established them in captivity.
