In the Winter 2012 issue of Zoo Grapevine, Tim Brown (who has now visited 750+ zoos) reviewed the Alaska Sealife Center, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Alaska Zoo over the span of 4 large, detailed pages. Here are some excerpts from the aquarium review:
"state-of-the-art aquatic zoo and research facility"
"dramatic coastal location...breathtaking view"
"a 'collegiate' feel about it with carpeted walkways, spacious windowed corridors and high ceilings"
A number of captive birds are kept at the facility: "Horned Puffin, Tufted Puffin, Pigeon Guillemot, Common Murre, Rhinoceros Auklet, Red-Legged Kittiwake, Long-Tailed Duck, Harlequin Duck and King Eider Duck." The other 3 species of Eider Duck are off-show although apparently "some 10 aviaries can be viewed from the main public gallery around 100 feet or so away." Steller's Eiders, Spectacled Eiders and Common Eiders are at the facility.
